Netherlands' Cutest Villages: Edam, Marken, & Zaanse Schans
After exploring much of eastern Netherlands, it was time to see the west. The villages of Marken, Edam, and Volendam were on my radar, thanks to Pinterest. Marken was our first stop, located on a little island that you have to drive on a dyke to get to. The town is filled with the cutest houses, painted mostly in a charming green.
It was too early in the morning for most of the shops to open, but we explored the idyllic fishing village all the same. They have a clog shop that’s not hard to miss. There are plenty of shoes to choose from if you fancy a pair. Unfortunately, my suitcase was already far too full!
Volendam and Edam are neighbours on the mainland near Marken. While we just drove through Volendam (I read it was far too touristy), Edam demanded a visit from us. Edam is pretty well known as the cheese capital in the country, and we couldn’t help but stop by the market and by cheese to take home. It was delicious!
We didn’t linger long here (I think we may have grown tired of all the cute buildings), so off we went to the historic village of Zaanse Schans. The site is pretty close to Amsterdam, just north of the cities outskirts. It still feels as if you’re in the city and all of a sudden you’ve arrived in this quaint and untouched village. Our GPS didn’t pick up the address so it was a bit tricky to find, but once you are close there are little signs that show you the way. It was quite touristy, but still worth the stop.
You can get a pass to go inside a lot of the buildings that have been turned into museums, but we chose the free route, like we had been doing on our entire trip. We sipped on make-your-own hot chocolate as we walked along the village paths. The food shops are free to enter you see (yay food!).
Just when you thought Netherlands couldn't get any cuter, it throws something else at you! These little villages made my heart smile.
One store was selling different kinds of Dutch waffles, so we just had to have some. I had mine with honey and it was delicious; perfect for any sweet tooth. The restaurant was perfect for anyone sweet on decor.
The day was an exciting look into another part of Netherlands. I highly recommend a day trip through this part of the country if you are staying in Amsterdam. Perhaps a longer stay if you think you can handle its charm!
