Visiting Jasper National Park in the Winter

If you are ever ever bored in Edmonton - which is inevitable - then you should zip off to Jasper for the day. Is it a waste of gas? Maybe. But if you do it right, and pack a car load of people (and snacks), then you might end up having a great day. Whether you end of skiing or site-seeing, it’s is up to you, but either way visiting Jasper National Park in the winter is a day well spent.

The shops in the off-season close as early as 4 in the afternoon, so be wary of that if that’s your goal. Although, shopping really isn’t the thing to do in Jasper as it can be in Banff. Stop for a cozy cuppa and snack if you wish; I personally love Cafe Mondo. After you’ve fuelled up from the long drive, it’s time to venture out into the snow.

Pyramid Lake is magical in all seasons, but winter is the only time that you can walk on water (or ice). While it’s a great place to canoe in the summer, bring snowshoes or skis in winter. You can always make use of the ice for skating or curling, too! Fancy a bit more romance? Take a ride on the horse-drawn sleigh.

Before you head home in the dark, grab a bite at Jasper Brewing Co. The food is delicious and the beer is local. They have a sister pub in Banff, too.

Jasper National Park in the winter, or whenever you visit, is best enjoyed outside in good company.
