The Highlevel Diner
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
While most of us here in Edmonton are blessed with Babas, some of you aren’t. (That’s right, I’m in the I-have-a-baba club). If you're ever in need of Ukrainian food, the best place to get your fix is the Highlevel Diner.
The Ukrainian platter is their Thursday special, complete with the best borscht in town. AND they have small cabbage rolls, in case you are wondering (the only kind of cabbage rolls that should exist tbh).
Of course, they have other amazing meals every day of the week. I’ve heard their weekend brunch is the best thing since sliced bread, but I’ve never tried it myself because there’s always a line-up out the door. The early bird definitely gets the worm in that scenario.
Last but not least, make sure to grab a cinnamon bun (or get half a dozen to go). The sauce is a drool-worthy upgrade to finish off your meal.
Where to Find the Highlevel Diner:
The Highlevel Diner is located just south of the famous Edmonton High Level Bridge. I've been meaning to take a walk on it, as well as ride it's very own Streetcar (it was closed the day we ventured to the Diner and Rutherford House). You can read more about the history of the bridge here. The restaurant itself isn’t nearly as old as the 1913 bridge, but it has been open since 1982.
Although the place is your run of the mill, simple, Canadian restaurant, simplicity is done so tastefully (literally). All their dishes are pretty traditional by local standards, but everything works and is certainly not boring.
The Highlevel Diner is a place that's "foodie" enough for me to be happy about, but a place where the large portions and relaxed atmosphere make my boyfriend equally impressed. If you're looking for a place to take your family and friends for breakfast or otherwise, head to the Diner...you won't be disappointed.
