Staying at an Old Mill

In my constant quest for finding unique and beautiful places to stay, I booked a very unique AirBnB in Ireland. Staying at this Old Mill near Waterford was a perfect halfway point between Cobh, Cashel, and Kilkenny (click on the names to read more about our adventures there).

Upon arriving at the Old Mill, we were greeted by a lovely lady whose husband's family had owned the place for as long as the family had been there. She told us about the history and how they'd come to own it, why they didn't live there anymore, and how they started renting it out to local students. They soon realized that AirBnB-ing it out was a bit more profitable. The place was expensive to keep up, after all. Soon they would be working on the mill itself, which is a rather large undertaking.

I love when AirBnB (or hotel or bed and breakfast owners) bring a personal touch and passion to hosting.

The house inside was definitely quirky; the stove (and heating system) needed explaining and there were more than enough places to hang out.

I wish there were more unique houses like this at home. I would happily trade my place of comfort for a piece of history like this.

The den had many interesting books about Ireland - I wanted more time here to hang out for a good read.

The bedrooms each were so unique. I slept in this cabin-y one with a cute little ensuite off the side.

Downstairs was probably the coolest room of all. A pool table, games galore, and a window into the old mills operations.

Though the house is large, there's always the neighbourhood cat to keep you company. He comes and visits and tries very hard to get inside. The lady of the house keeps him fed and happy.

Overall, the Old Mill was one of the most unique and memorable accommodations I've ever had. I'd highly recommend giving it a go sometime. It's amazing what you find off the beaten path.
