summer wardrobe essentials

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about wardrobe pieces that will help you beat the heat. Whether you’re planning summer getaway or simply enjoying the warm weather at home, there are certain timeless summer essentials that can make or break your hot weather style. Let’s be real - no one likes thigh chafe and irreversible sweat stains. I’ve rounded up my top ten must-have items for a classic summer look (really, no matter your aesthetic), and let you in on how to mix and match them for effortless style.

1. a white button-up shirt

this is one of my essentials year round. A classic white button-down shirt is just so versatile - there are countless ways to style it, and you can wear it under and over so many other pieces. It can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, and worn with everything from shorts to skirts to trousers, making it THE perfect piece to ground your style.

2. lightweight tank

there are so many options when it comes to tank top styles. If you’re more of a corporate girly, a silk camisole works well layered under blazers, and you can wear it for a night out. If your lifestyle is more casual, a basic cotton tank will do the trick. I love to wear mine under my white button-ups!

3. shorts

umm yeah, I don’t love most shorts either. The trick is to get an oversized pair, take them in at the waist or wear a belt, and then have something comfortable enough that doesn’t squeeze your thighs (causing the dreaded double thigh). It’s worth having a pair around for days when you want to get some sunshine on your limbs, or plan on spending time around the water. Denim isn’t the most comfy in my opinion (no one likes having that much fabric on a hot day), so linen, twill, or basic cotton shorts are the way to go - and they look a little more dressed up.

4. dress

for those days when it’s too hot to wear anything else. This is my go-to look for when it’s that time of the month and putting on clothes gives me the ick - very bloat friendly. Summer dresses are one item of clothing that tends to change a lot with the trends, so it’s best to choose something unique and fun, that isn’t on the style charts - and then you won’t be tempted to get rid of it next year when the trend inevitably passes.

5. sun hat

the perfect accessory for summer. Not only does it add a touch of glamour to any outfit, but it also provides much-needed shade on sunny days.

6. sandals

suns out, toes out. If you have a more casual style, Birkenstocks are the best (not biased at all haha); but if you are looking for something more elevated, I adore woven sandals. They just go with everything. I’ve picked up variations of this sandal every time my pair wears out over the course of the last 15 years.

7. sunglasses

the right pair can change the vibe of an outfit so much. It’s honestly worth owning a collection to easily mix up your look. Plus it protects your eyes from the harmful UV rays.

8. a basket bag

my favourite summer accessory. Similar to the woven shoes, a basket bag just goes with everything. You can opt for something more basket-like to better fit your needs (whether that be picnicking or reading in the park), or something smaller for date night.

9. another top

ugh I know, not very specific or helpful. BUT I couldn’t list this as just one item, because it depends so much on the climate of where you live. Honestly, as a Canadian, I need a lightweight summer sweater. Even when it’s plus 40C, the evenings can get so cool and windy that a sweater is a must. Most other Canadian gals have a denim jacket in their repertoire (I’m sorry, I just can’t). If you live in a place that’s on the colder side too, having a layering piece is ideal. Alternatively, if you live in Texas or somewhere else unbearably hot, you might opt for a breezy blouse, a linen tee, or a crop top. It’s best to choose something that pairs with your bottoms for maximum mix-and-matchability!

10. linen pants

the ultimate summer staple. Stops thigh chafe in its tracks. Hides any leg sweat. No unnecessary shaving. Looks great even after missing that spray tan appointment. Gives a Nancy Meyers ‘effortlessly chic’ vibe. I wouldn’t be without a pair (or three tbh) in the summer. Linen is lightweight and breathable, perfect for keeping you cool and comfortable on the hottest of days. I know linen can be a bit of a hassle (especially if you despise wrinkles), so linen blends can be a great alternative! Otherwise, just roll with the lived-in look.

bonus: the perfect swimwear

I am a water-lover through and through - always happiest by the beach. What would this list be if I didn’t round up a few of the cutest (and timeless) swim looks?

Are there any summer wardrobe essentials that I missed? Anything you’d change or take away? This was the final segment of this series, so if you missed out, be sure to take a look!
