Exploring Scotland’s Loch Ness
While staying at Tulloch Castle, we were able to explore the area of Loch Ness pretty well. Starting our day driving towards Inverness, we followed the tiny tourist trail south (taking our first single track road) to Inverfarigaig. Here, we got out of the car to hike up through an enchanting forest for a birds eye view of Loch Ness.
Not too much further down the road, we stopped at Foyers Falls. It is a place the poet Robert Burns had much to say about. An exciting stop for literature and nature fans alike, and gives a look into life when travellers were first discovering wonderful little places such as the falls.
The scenic drive really was wonderful; if you checked out my driving tips you know how hard it was for me not to stop every few minutes on the road!
Next stop was Fort Augustus, a little town on the southernmost tip of the lake. Derek and I were both pretty disappointed with this place. I felt as if it was a bit too much of a tourist trap, and you really don’t get a unique view of Ness. The most interesting part of the town was probably their operating canal.
Derek and I were debating what to do next, whether to stop at Urquhart Castle or at the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition (both right around Drumnadrochit). We chose Uruquhart Castle. It was first along the road and we thought we might have time to visit the Exhibition, but we didn't (another excuse to return really).
