The Icefields Parkway

A stop over along the Icefields Parkway

The last leg of my sister and my journey on our mountain road trip was driving the southern part of the Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise. We made it our mission to attempt to stop at most of the roadside turnouts on our way home. It did prove to be a difficult feat, as we often would not see them coming around a mountain corner, which in turn I slammed on my breaks and pulled over (if I could do so safely) sending us into a fit of giggles.

During one of our first stops, Julianna insisted on wading in the icy cold mountain lake.

Julianna wading in the waterWho knew putting your socks on could look so picture perfect?

I enjoyed the picturesque scenery from the warm and safe shoreline.

Along the way we spotted Silverhorn, a peak that really stood out among the rest.

The blue-green mountain lake before it glistened from the sun’s rays that peaked out behind the clouds.

After turning off onto the David Thompson Highway to Rocky Mountain House, I decided to pull over and take a few much coveted mountain highway pictures.

The highway was barren of other vehicles and there were stretches of straight and narrow road before it disappeared over of the next hill.

Mountain road trips are the best

A few pictures later and narrowly escaping a car speeding around the bend, we hopped back into the bug and sped away to our next turn out.

We discovered this beautiful flat blue lake surrounded by the changing colours of fall shortly after, and I put it in my mind that this was my turn now to take a dip in the chilling mountain water.

My turn to dip my toes in

It was exhilarating: well worth the refreshment.

We stopped one last time before leaving the mountains behind us, and it was for a brief moment when the drizzling of rain let up and not one rainbow, but two popped out. It was a beautiful end to a beautiful trip.

Double rainbow

Although, we did have a few dark hours of driving back to Edmonton ahead of us. I can’t wait for our next little getaway!
